﴿ وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ...﴾
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." ... (Quran 40:60)
Days come and go, some filled
with laughter, and some that seem to be never-ending. Yet, what each day has in
common with the other is that every day you are longing for comfort, happiness,
and love more and more. But where can this peace be found, where can you find
love, where can you find happiness, a solution to your problem, an answer to
your questions, relief from your stress, a cure to your pain? All this can be
found in the most prestigious and sacred form of communication with the Divine,
in dua’a, invocation.

And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided. (Quran 2:186)
The comfort you are in desperate
need of is much closer than you think; it is in the concealed conversations you
have with your Creator. When you have nowhere else to go, supplicate Him, call
upon Him, ask Him for help, ask Him for a solution, pour your heart out to Him,
complain to Him about the world that is treating you harshly, describe to Him
your feelings that no one will ever understand but Him. The key to response is
found in dua’a (Al-Qarni, pg 217) ; a response to everything you are asking for,
a response that you could have never imagined.
Supplicating Allah through dua’a
is not easy, and sometimes you won’t feel that it comes from the heart from the
first time. But it takes two key factors to reach that elevated state that
furnishes tranquility when supplicating Allah. Firstly, your belief in Allah,
that He is the One and Only God, that He is your Creator, He has control of
your entire life. Truly believing that you are under His care is what will give
you the ability to step forward and call upon Him. Secondly, once you affirm
your belief in Allah, your obedience towards Him will display your love for
Him, your love for Him that shows that you depend on Him and Him alone. Your
dependence on Him will provide you with the comfort, peace, and happiness that
you are longing for. Allah is not waiting for you to come to Him, for He can
give you whatever you desire before you even consider asking for it. But it's
the effort you make to go call upon Him that shows your obedience to Him and
your reliance on Him to grant you the guidance that your heart is helpless
without.

﴿ أَمَّن يُجِيبُ الْمُضْطَرَّ إِذَا دَعَاهُ...﴾
Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him ... (Quran 27:62)
The beauty of dua’a lies in the sacred love for
Allah, and that the invocations you make are between you and your Creator only.
A supplication that trembles the heart is not easy to attain. Sometimes it can
be made at the peak of your excitement and gratitude, and sometimes it can be
made at the deepest point of your struggles. And sometimes it is made when you
are hurt, when no one understands you, when you are helplessly trying to escape
from the voices in your head, when you sit there and cannot find one word to
say to Him, one word to describe how you feel; but your tongue whispers, Ya
Rab (Oh Allah). Those two words came from the bottom of your heart and summed
up everything you wanted to say. It shows that you depend on Him and only Him,
that your matters are all in His hand, that you are confident that He knows
what is best for you, that you are not alone and He is by your side, and most
importantly, He knows exactly how you feel, and what it is that you want. The
relief found in those two words is beyond description, because after uttering
them your heart is at peace knowing that no matter what happens, everything is
going to be okay, because you called upon Him, and He will respond in His own
time, in His own way.
