One Thing to Ask For

﴿اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ

Guide us to the straight path – (Quran 1:6)

Amen.

Five times a day in our prayer, we repeat Surat Al-Fatihah two, three, or even four times. How many times do we realize that we are reciting perhaps the most prominent chapter in the Holy Quran? How many times have we realized that our lips are speaking the “greatest, wisest, most comprehensive supplication we can ever make”? (Al-Kharraz, pg. 18) Standing there in prayer, quickly whispering the Opening Chapter, have you ever comprehended that you are making the most eloquent supplication?

Upon reciting this chapter you are utilizing the etiquette of supplication (Al-Kharraz, pg. 18). You begin your supplication in His name, the most Merciful. Praising Him, Lord of the worlds. Recognizing His most prominent attribute, His mercy. Acknowledging His sovereignty on the Day of Recompense. Affirming that we worship Him and ask Him for Help. Finally, after glorifying Him, we make our request. In fact, the purpose of Surat Al-Fatihah itself is to make this one appeal (Islamiyyat, pg. 41), to ask for one thing, Guidance, guidance on His straight path. Guidance on His path so that we are granted His favor rather than being led astray and stricken with His anger. (Quran 1:1-7)

We repeat Surat Al-Fatihah several times a day because we are kindly, humanely, and compassionately asking for the most imperative element we are in need of in this life, guidance, which only comes from Him (Islamiyyat, pg. 40). Guidance “which helps us worship Him like we should” (Al-Kharraz, pg. 18), guidance to do the right thing, to live the right way, “to provide us with comfort and peace” (Islamiyyat, pg. 41).

Life has taught us that we are helpless without Allah's instruction, thus we continuously ask Him for guidance . The Opening Chapter is read perhaps endlessly during our lives because we can never get enough of Allah’s guidance and we need it at all times, onto His straight path and guidance throughout the entire path (Islamiyyat, pg. 40). His guidance begins by initiating our faith, faith that embarks on believing in Allah and His messenger ﷺ and by affirming that it is to Him we belong and to Him we will return. Guidance that leads us to His path and throwing behind you this world for Him, for His eternal satisfaction, to gain His pleasure, and to be granted heaven in the hereafter (Al-Kharraz, pg. 18). Everything you do as you trek this trail will be for His sake, and everything you stumble upon will be from Him for a determined reason. He will help you stroll this path and will provide you with the assistance you need to keep you going. Even after gaining guidance onto the straight path, we still ask Him for guidance and continue to repeat the supplication of Surat Al-Fatihah because we are still at the mercy of His guidance. It is His guidance that allows us to remain firm and steadfast on the path in this world. It is His guidance that strengthens our faith and gives us with the ability to earn a bounty of good deeds in this world. And it is His guidance that keeps us firm on the path in this world and allows us to remain firm on the path in the next life. (Al-Kharraz, pg. 19)

Next time you recite Surat Al-Fatihah, recite it with a humble heart and plead for guidance onto the straight path sincerely. Redefine your life, renew your goals, and reset your priorities to the ultimate purpose of life, guidance onto the straight path. On the straight path He will provide you with all that you need, He will grant you guidance towards happiness, relief, and most importantly peace, regardless of what life throws in your way.

To Him

﴿وَقَالَ إِنِّي ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّي سَيَهْدِينِ

And [then] he said, "Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me. (Quran 37:99)

Not one day is the same as another. There are blissful days. The days overflowing with happiness, joy and a smile that cannot be contained. But there are also days where dilemmas and challenges are seemingly endless with not even one solution within sight. It is in the hardest of times where we find those we love the most by our side. Likewise, it is also at those times we are in deep need of assistance, or most importantly in need of a practical way to deal with any situation we face. Moreover, it is guidance that we need. A guide on how to deal with life, how to endure a struggle patiently, how to approach any situation, good or bad, and finally how to find inner peace and tranquility in the heart. This guidance is provided by Allah, the One who created your soul, the One who created your heart, and the One who will heal the bruises that cause your heart to ache.

Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated that the Messenger of Allah () said:
“Allah, the Most High said: ‘I am as My slave thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me to himself, I remember him to Myself, and if he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than that. And if he seeks to draw nearer to Me by a hand span, I draw nearer to him by a forearm’s length, and if he comes to Me by a forearm’s length, I draw nearer to him by an arm’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I come to him quickly.’” (Tirmidhi, Jami`at-Tirmidhi, 48:234)

Take the decision to overcome your struggles by seeking His guidance. Go to your Creator; think of Him, remember Him, step by step draw yourself closer to Him, run to Him, and take that leap of faith to find yourself with Him. For with Him you will find guidance and perseverance to live every day that passes. For with Him you will be happy and at peace even at the toughest of times. For He will take the most care of you and with His guidance, peace is the only outcome.

Lost

﴿مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَىٰ

Your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muhammad], nor has He detested [you]. (Quran 93:3)
Sometimes, life becomes too much to handle. It isn’t perfect for anyone, but at times it becomes wholly unbearable. Whether it is the challenges that become increasingly difficult day after day, or the obstacles we face preventing us from achieving our dreams, or perhaps the plethora of complications we face as we try to secure our happiness.Happiness, which for some of us seems unattainable due to the distress we have encountered in our lives.  Mistrust in those we thought were dear to us, loss of hope in achieving our goals, or pain from calamities that seem to be endless. Do not worry. He did not abandon you nor did He forget to grant His blessings upon you.  He did not befall all of these tragedies upon you because He is displeased with you as you suppose.  Rather, He is testing you; He is placing trials in your way because He wants you to turn towards Him. In fact, He loves you and wants your heart to ache for what is right, to settle on His guidance.

﴿وَوَجَدَكَ ضَالًّا فَهَدَىٰ

And He found you lost and guided [you], (Quran 93:7)
Yes, the struggles of this world have exhausted you and forced you to roam around desperately pleading for guidance. No, He did not forget you; in fact when you were lost the most, He caught you, and granted you His guidance. You have had your fair share of pain, loss, grief. Discomfort, insecurity, fear, and most importantly you are lost. You are lost because you cannot find happiness, lost because you cannot find yourself, lost because you are clueless of where to go, where to turn, where you should take the next step. It is this loss that arouses your belief in Him within you, which forces you to rely on Him because the world has turned its back on and has forced you to patiently persevere and turn in His direction. The world turned into a maze and you couldn’t find yourself out, until your endurance and trust in Him led you to the way out, to His guidance. His guidance which will lift you back up and place you onto His path, the straight path. As long as you keep faith in Him, He will hold your hand along the way to keep you from tripping over the obstacles in your way, looking right or left, or even turning back. With His guidance you will find your true self, accomplish your purpose, and most importantly find inner peace.
